Connecting
with Nature Safely: Staying Active in Our Summer Paradise

Our
coastal home thrives with activities, from energizing bike paths to peaceful
beach yoga. Let's gratefully soak in the sun's energetic light and revitalizing
power this summer.
Florida's
summer heat and humidity increase risks like dehydration, heat illness, and
sunburn. Being aware of our bodies' signals; dizziness, fatigue, nausea,
headache, etc. – empowers us to prioritize safety and seek immediate shade and
hydration for continued well-being.
So,
how can we enjoy our active lifestyles safely during these hot summer months
while staying connected to our world? Here are some essential tips:
Seek
the Cool:
Plan outdoor activities for the gentler hours of the day, typically early
morning or late evening. Avoid strenuous exercise between 11 am and 4 pm.
Hydrate!
Hydrate! Hydrate! Staying
hydrated is fundamental. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your
outdoor adventures. Consider adding natural electrolyte sources as needed to
replenish what you lose.
Dress
for the Elements: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made
of breathable fabrics. Remember a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield
yourself from the sun’s rays.
Protect
Your Skin:
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 20 minutes
before heading out and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or
sweating.
Listen
to Your Inner Wisdom: Listen to any signals your body sends
regarding heat-related stress. If you feel unwell, stop your activity, find
shade, and hydrate. Avoid pushing yourself too hard in the heat.
Find
Comfort in Shade: Take advantage of the many shaded areas along
our walking and biking paths and seek shade for breaks.
Respect
Our Wild Neighbors: When enjoying our natural environment, be
aware of and give space to the other living beings we share this land with,
such as alligators and snakes.
Water
Safety First:
If you enjoy water activities like swimming or stand-up paddleboarding, always
wear or have a safety vest readily accessible.
Embracing
our coastal summer is more than just staying safe; nourish your spirit, mind,
and body. Let laughter and play be your guide this coastal summer. Rediscover
childlike joy through creative activities and share belly laughs and deep
breaths with loved ones for a holistic boost.
May
we move through this summer in our Hammock haven with a mindful appreciation
for our natural world, nurturing our well-being and strengthening our community
bonds.
